The problem

Cutting trees for charcoal drives deforestation, while Rwanda’s growing population generates more waste. At the same time, households face high cooking energy costs and farmers struggle with low soil fertility.

The solution

Green Home uses waste as a natural resource to produce coal (briquettes) and fertilizer in a single process. The team also developed the Gisubizo stove — an insulated cooker that can prepare two or more dishes with the same energy needed for one, cutting fuel use and waste disposal costs.

Products

  • Ubwiza coal — clean, affordable briquette fuel made from crushed organic waste
  • Eza fertilizers — organic fertilizer from the same waste-processing line
  • Gisubizo stove — portable insulated cooker that saves time and fuel

What makes them unique: clean and affordable cooking energy; saves time and money for households.

Production process

Waste is crushed into small particles using a manual grinder, then mixed with other ingredients, shaped into briquettes, and sun-dried. Current capacity: about 20 briquettes per day with the existing equipment.

From waste to fuel — field results

  1. Mix crushed waste with binding ingredients
  2. Dry briquettes in the sun until dehydrated
  3. Supply customers for everyday cooking

A client in Munyinya cell, Rukomo sector already uses Ubwiza coal for daily cooking.

Gisubizo stove in action

The insulated Gisubizo stove was tested with customer Irakoze in Gisuna village, Byumba sector: rice was added, the lid sealed to retain heat, and the meal was ready in about 20 minutes using minimal fuel.

Market size

Green Home targets three segments:

  • Home use (B2C) — 4M potential households
  • Farmers — fertilizer and fuel for rural producers
  • Schools (B2B) — 200 institutional buyers

Competition

Main competitors include Oak Investment and TUBURA (One Acre Fund Rwanda). Green Home’s advantages: cheaper products, use of natural/waste resources, and quick local delivery.
