UR GIIH INNOVATION WEEK
2023
Scaling up student-led innovation for a thriving Africa - universities as living labs for sustainability
Africa is witnessing a surge in economic development, outpacing global averages, with a projected 4% GDP growth in 2023-2024. Increased investment in African science, technology, and innovation is evident, marked by a proliferation of innovation hubs and incubators. The rise of unicorn startups in FinTech underscores the pivotal role of policy support for innovation. However, the challenge lies in aligning these initiatives with local needs and ensuring inclusivity. The digitalization of African economies must be sustainable and address concerns of inequality. Moreover, Africa faces the dual challenge and opportunity of providing employment for its large youth population. The University of Rwanda's Grid Innovation and Incubation Hub (GIIH) envisions educational institutions as catalysts for sustainable and inclusive innovation. GIIH, operating at the nexus of societal actors, connects diverse stakeholders to drive societal change. Celebrating these interactions, GIIH hosts an Innovation Week to foster productive systems and showcase student-led innovation. Rwanda, amid its rapid economic growth, champions a knowledge economy through the University of Rwanda. GIIH, established in 2021, amplifies societally relevant research, particularly in energy, food and water. This second Innovation Week, in collaboration with other hubs, aims to catalyze innovation gains and emphasize the transformative role of universities in Africa's development and national strategies.
