Prof Telesphore Kabera was awarded a Distinguished International Students Scholarship by the China Scholarship Council to study for his MSc and PhD at the prestigious China University of Geosciences in Wuhan-Hubei. He returned to his Alma mater in Kigali in 2012, where his research interests cover a range of environmental fields, including solid waste management (SWM); biogas; indoor air quality; CO₂ sequestration and climate change; environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA); and water and wastewater, specifically water harvesting and constructed wetland. On teaching, he leads a Swedish initiative with KTH on Challenge Driven Education at University of Rwanda and He is currently the Director of Research and Innovation at the College of Science and Technology – University of Rwanda,
Prof Kabera was Principal Investigator for an International Science Council (ISC) project within their 5-year Leading Integrated Research for Agenda 2030 in Africa (LIRA2030) programme: Health effects of indoor air pollution from cooking stoves in Kigali and Dar es Salaam cities: An assessment and solution. He is a team of three interesting projects, two of them are funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency)’s; one is entitled “Strengthening capacity for sustainable bioenergy, waste management and air pollution control in Rwanda” and another is entitled “Efficient SDG Fulfillment for Regions in Transitions “EFFORT”” and the third project is called “Water ESSENCE” funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation.
Prof Kabera is active in the international research community. He participates in ISC’s LIRA2030 Annual Research Forum, most held in Dakar, Senegal (https://council.science/current/news/lira2030-annual-research-forum-begins-in-dakar-senegal). He is on the technical committee for the International Conferences on Renewable Energy and Environmental Engineering (www.REEE.net – Paris 2018, Munich 2019). He has published papers in various journals including Biomass and Bioenergy Journal, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Sustainability, Archives of environmental & occupational health, Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, Atmospheric Environment, Energy for Sustainable Development, Waste Management and Research, Systematic Reviews and International Journal of Environmental Studies. He is a regular peer reviewer for research proposals submitted to ISC, and for reputable journals including Environmental Management, Cleaner production, Plosone, Environment, Development and Sustainability; Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Journal; and International Journal of Environmental Studies, etc.. He is a member of the Editorial Board for the Waste Management and Research Journal (https://journals.sagepub.com/editorial-board/wmr).
Prof Kabera is currently the Director of Research and Innovation at the College of Science and Technology – University of Rwanda.
